Solutions for Every Vessel

Workboat Design That Works for You

Gilbert Associates’ experience with various workboat designs goes all the way back to our very first project, the wooden steam tug C.L. Churchill. Still operational and refurbished with a diesel engine, this “beauty of a boat” currently in service to the Buffalo Maritime Center has most recently been tasked with guiding a replica of the Seneca Chief on its maiden voyage commemorating the bicentennial of the Eerie Canal’s opening in 1825.

Our workboats are designed for longevity, strength, and reliability. No matter the job, operating conditions, or regulatory requirements, we will collaborate with you to create a workboat that is up to the task.

Featured Workboats

M/V Tori Pasentine & M/V Brandon T. Pasentine

The Tori Pesentine and Brandon T. Pasentine are 105’ x 34’ towboats equipped with Caterpillar 3,300hp marine engines and ABS limited load line certificates. Their retractable pilothouses enable these versatile towboats to navigate even the low fixed bridges in the waters around Chicago.

R/V Oceanus

Gilbert Associates designed this 177’ oceanographic research vessel and her two sisters, the R/V Wecoma and Endeavor.

M/V Marty Cullinan & M/V Victoria Pasentine

The M/V Marty Cullinan has an ABS load line certificate for fair-weather operations in the waters between Chicago and Burns Harbor, IN. Weighing in at 387 gross tons, the vessel is 120’-0” LOA x 35’0” x 11’-6”. Her all-steel construction is powered by two CAT 3512 engines rated at 2,011 HP, each at 1,600 RPM, with Twin Disc gears. The boat is outfitted with two 175kw Tier 3 John Deere 6090 Gen sets 460v. The telescoping pilothouse allows service in certain areas restricted by overhead clearances and draft limitations. With the house fully retracted, the vessel’s max air draft is 17’-8”. Sleeping accommodations and facilities are provided for eight persons, while sound-dampening systems have been implemented throughout the main deck house. The Victoria Pasentine is a sister vessel also operating on the inland waterways for Florida Marine Transporters.

M/V Paul A Wronowski

Designed by Gilbert Associates and built by Thames Shipyard and Repair Company in 1980, the 85’ Z-Drive tugboat Paul A. Wronowski can often be seen escorting and maneuvering U.S. Navy nuclear-powered submarines in and out of Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, CT.

M/V Harvey Intruder, M/V Harvey Thunder, & M/V Harvey Titan

125’ LWL ABS A+1 tugboats designed by Gilbert Associates in 1996 for Harvey Gulf International Marine.

M/V Coastal Progress

Originally supply ships, Gilbert Associates assisted in converting these two into Aleutian Trade cargo vessels, providing speed/power analysis, stability calculations, stability testing, and construction plans for a new bulbous bow & stern extension. Our efforts increased each vessel’s speed by 3 knots, added 80 LT of freight capacity, and reduced fuel consumption by 20,000 gal per trip, allowing for five additional round trips a year.
