“There is no greater measure of a successful vessel than the desire for an owner to copy it.”

We are proud that Gilbert Associates’ focus on quality, attention to detail, and decades of experience results in a high rate of repeat business. Much of that repeat business comes from satisfied clients seeking to expand their fleets with sister vessels based on our previous designs. In some cases, these are exact duplicates of the original vessels, but we can also modify existing plans to meet any need.
Constructed at Horizon Shipbuilding in Bayou La Batre, Alabama, the 140’ x 42’ x 11’-6” M/V John Grimsley has seven sisters, including the Dennis Pasentine and the Rusty Zeller.
The Gilbert-designed 93’ scalloper was produced seven times from 2004 to 2013. These seven sisters are based on a previous Gilbert Associates design for the two 95’ scallopers, the F/V Ranger and F/V Resolution. The F/V Neskone was the first of these scallop fishing vessels built at 93’, and she was followed by 6 sisters: the F/V Polaris, F/V Wisdom, F/V Horizon, F/V Arcturus, F/V Røst, and F/V Pyxis. Many of these vessels currently operate out of New Bedford, MA.
The 175’ LWL ferry Carol Jean was designed by Gilbert Associates in 1981 for service between Point Judith and Block Island, RI. She was joined four years later by her sister, Anna C., which was built with a lengthened bow and an added bulb for reduced resistance and increased speed.
After 20 years of service, the Carol Jean underwent an extensive repowering project requiring modifications to systems and structure throughout the vessel. The existing engines, skegs, struts, foundations, exhaust, electrical, shafting, engine cooling, ER vents, FO & LO were replaced. The result was a vessel that could go 4.5 knots faster at full load.
Powered by two Caterpillar 3512 industrial diesel engines for a total of 3820 horsepower, the 120′ x 35’ x 11’-6” Capt. W.D. Nunley and Brent Ice are two of eight towboats built of this class.
